Suspended deputy mayor Salim Mehajer is in a turf battle with his personal council as officials push for him to rip up the synthetic lawn he ‘illegally’ installed on the character strip outside his lavish residence.

Auburn council workers have made plenty of recommendations to the Independent Assessment Panel after investigating Mr Mehajer’s palatial mansion in Sydney’s west.

‘The proposed artificial turf in lieu of grass to the character strip is hostile to the character of the locality,’ the report says.

‘It doesn’t allow for planting, has no ecological benefits, doesn’t enable for natural drainage, reduces the ability of the bottom to offer thermal massing, and has antagonistic impacts in streetscape visible amenity phrases.’
